As a mom and a Sussex WI newborn photographer, I know how quickly those first few weeks pass. Newborn photography preserves the tiny details that change in a blink and creates timeless images for your family, birth announcements, and special keepsakes.

Newborn sessions are best reserved during pregnancy, with a tentative date scheduled around your due date and adjusted once baby arrives. While many families choose to photograph their little one within the first two weeks for those sleepy poses, beautiful images can be captured at any stage. Every baby is different, and I tailor each session to yours.

I offer studio newborn photography, in-home lifestyle sessions, and seasonal outdoor options. Parents and siblings are always welcome. My studio is based in Sussex, Wisconsin, and I serve families throughout the greater Milwaukee area, with travel available for in-home sessions.

See the following information to help you prep for your newborn portrait session:

How soon should I book my newborn session? It’s always best to book your session as early as possible. Michelle books a limited number of newborn sessions each month so it’s a good idea to get on the calendar as soon as you’re ready to guarantee your spot. Michelle will tentatively book you for your due date and adjust your session date when baby is born.

How soon should we come in for our newborn session? Newborns should be photographed when they’re still brand new - ideally in the first 5-15 days of life. Contact Michelle within 48 hours of baby’s birth to be scheduled.

How long will our newborn session last? Premium newborn sessions typically last 2-4 hours to give adequate time for soothing, feeding and changing between poses. Since each baby is different, no session will be exactly the same but you can expect your session to last a few hours. For wrapped, simply baby, and outdoor sessions, you can expect your session to last about an hour.

Is newborn photography safe for my baby? Safety is Michelle’s #1 priority when photographing newborns. She has a professionally trained assistant for every newborn session and never forces baby into positions or props that are uncomfortable or dangerous. Some of the poses you see on her website are called "composites" where baby is being supported at all times. Part of her editing process includes merging the photos in Photoshop to remove her assistant's hands so baby appears to be supporting him/herself although we all know s/he is safe the entire time. Michelle has trained with the top newborn photographers in the country and has extensive safety training. She also carries full insurance for your peace of mind. In addition, Michelle’s studio is kept very clean and everything that touches baby is properly sterilized after use to keep your newborn free from germs. Michelle is happy to discuss any concerns you have as she wants you to feel 100% comfortable having her photograph your baby.

What should we bring to our newborn session? Michelle has a large selection of props, headbands, wraps, hats, outfits and backdrops available for your session. She fully styles your session with her items so you do not need to bring anything additional unless you want to. Family heirlooms and sentimental items are always welcome but certainly not required. Session styling will be discussed at your pre-session consultation.

Can my other child(ren) be included in the newborn session? Yes! Sibling photos are often a client favorite from the newborn session. Michelle and her assistant have many tricks to get natural smiles and make beautiful portraits. Some clients like to drive separate so siblings don’t need to stay at the studio for the entire session but Michelle does have a TV and snacks to help occupy siblings when they’re not being photographed.

What should we wear for our newborn photos? Michelle will provide wardrobe for your newborn but you should coordinate your family’s outfits for your session. Keep it very simple, classic and plain. In order to keep focus on baby, avoid bright colors, bold patterns, logos and oversized clothing. Wear items that will allow you to snuggle closely with baby and that will look good on your wall years from now. Simple tank tops or dresses for mom, neutral t-shirts or button ups for dad, classic dresses and neutral colors for siblings are best. It’s also important to pay attention to hair, makeup and nails. Professional hair and makeup is available and recommended for tired mamas who would like a little pampering. Fingers will be seen in photos so it’s best to avoid chipped polish on mom and siblings. Feel free to bring wardrobe options or to send Michelle photos if you'd like her to take a look.

Is there anything else we should know to prepare for our session? You will be sent a newborn prep guide a few days before your session with last minute tips. You can always reach out with any questions ahead of time.
